Deep Tissue Massage

What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. The purpose is to "unstick" the fibres of a muscle while releasing deeply-held patterns of tension, removing toxins, while relaxing and soothing the muscle. It is both corrective and therapeutic. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue.

When Should I get a Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep Tissue Massage as its name implies is used to reach the deeper tissues to free up restrictions in muscles and other connective tissues, and can help with scar tissue. When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly.

How is it Performed?
It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure and friction on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
Because many toxins are released, it's important to drink plenty of water after a deep-tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.
After a short recovery period it usually feels good and it is beneficial to your health.

Swedish Massage

What is Swedish Massage?
This particular massage involves a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being.

When Should I get a Swedish Massage?
As the main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles, it shortens recovery time from muscular strain by cleansing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.

How is it Performed?
Swedish massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions. The usual sequence of techniques are:

1. Effleurage: Gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs and/or fingertips
2. Petrissage: Kneading movements with the hands, thumbs and/or fingers
3. Friction: Circular pressures with the palms of hands, thumbs and/or fingers
4. Vibration: Oscillatory movements that shake or vibrate the body
5. Percussion: Brisk hacking or tapping
6. Passive and active movements: Bending and stretching

Remedial Massage
What is Remedial Massage?
When muscles become knotted and tense or damaged, remedial massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle and shallow, or deep and strong. The practitioner
endeavours to identify the original biomechanical
dysfunction causing your problem, thus healing the cause of the disorder, as well as the symptoms.

Benefits of remedial massage include the stimulation to the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed; the calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; and the toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility. An improvement to the health of the cells, the repairing of tissues, and the easing of stiffness and tension can also be experienced through therapeutic relaxation.

When Should I get a Remedial Massage?
Remedial Massage may be helpful for relaxation or injury. It is not advised in the case of acute disease.
It may be useful for the treatment of muscle tightness and pain, whiplash, arthritis, tennis elbow, neck and back pain, scoliosis,frozen shoulder, headaches and sports injuries.

Massage therapy supports and speeds up the body's own repair mechanisms.

How is it Performed?
Remedial massage uses specialised techniques to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints. Oil is applied directly on the skin to aloow the muscles associated with the problem can be rubbed and deeply penetrated. Passive joint stretching moves are also used to restore joint mobility.

Sports Massage

What is Sports Massage?
Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries.

When Should I get a Deep Tissue Massage?
The purpose of Sports Massage
The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. The massage will help prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries. Sports massage can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether a person is an athlete or a once a week jogger.
Sports massage has many benefits. In addition to feeling good, it reduces the heart rate and blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, reduces muscle tension, improves flexibility, and relieves pain. Each sport and athletic event uses muscle groups in a different way.

Sports Massage can also include pre-event, post-event and maintenance techniques that promote greater athletic endurance and performance, lessen chances of injury and reduce recovery time.

How is it Performed?
Depending on the needs of the athlete, a variety of techniques are used. The technique often involves a blend of traditional Swedish Massage and Shiatsu specifically designed to treat professional athletes.

Each type of sport has different demands on the players. Each sport uses muscle groups in a different way. Sports massage is designed to address those specific concerns and may differ according to the sport the athlete plays. Sports massage can be aimed to help heal strained muscles and allow healthy ones to reach peak performance and maintain it while minimizing the risk of injury.

Does it Hurt?

Massage is quite safe but different levels of pain may be experienced during and after the treatment.
Swedish massage is generally relaxing and has a low level of pain associated with it. Deep Tissue massage on the other hand is quite painful as deep contracted tissues are accessed and released. Remedial and Sports massage are generally in between these two extremes, while pregnancy massage is designed to be safe and relaxing.

No matter what type of massage you are receiving you can always request your practitioner to use a lighter pressure if you are in pain.

Reguardless of the pressures used to release tight muscles, they may be sore for 1-2 days following treatment.

Can I get rebates from my health insurance?

Rebates are available from some Health Insurance providers for massage services. It is best to call your provider regarding your level of cover, then our office to determine whether our practitioner is covered for your service as this changes from one provider to another.
